Planning a trip to Iceland can be exciting—but also surprisingly complicated. Weather changes quickly, road conditions can affect your plans, and there are far more incredible places to visit than you can fit into one trip.
We've put together some of our favourite Iceland travel resources to help you plan your adventure with confidence.
Essential Iceland Travel Resources
🌦️ Iceland Weather
Icelandic weather can change quickly, sometimes within minutes. Always check the latest forecast before heading out, especially if you're driving or hiking.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office is the best place to check current weather conditions and forecasts.
Tip: Don't just check Reykjavík. Weather can be completely different in different parts of Iceland.
🚗 Road Conditions
Planning to drive around Iceland? Check road conditions before every long journey.
The official Icelandic road information service provides updates about road conditions, closures and difficult driving conditions.
This is particularly important during winter and when travelling into the Icelandic Highlands.
🛡️ SafeTravel Iceland
Iceland is an incredibly safe country to visit, but its nature should never be underestimated.
Strong winds, rapidly changing weather, rivers, glaciers and volcanic landscapes can all present hazards.
SafeTravel Iceland provides safety alerts and useful information for travellers exploring the country's more remote areas.
🌋 Visit Iceland
The official tourism website is a great source of inspiration when deciding where to go and what to see.
You'll find information about Iceland's regions, attractions, activities and travel ideas—from famous sights to places further off the beaten path.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Iceland?
There isn't really one "best" time to visit Iceland. It depends on what you want to experience.
Summer brings long daylight hours, easier road conditions and excellent opportunities for hiking and exploring the Highlands.
Autumn brings fewer visitors, beautiful colours and the beginning of Northern Lights season.
Winter offers snowy landscapes, shorter days and the possibility of seeing the Aurora Borealis.
Spring is a quieter time to visit, with longer daylight returning and nature beginning to wake up.
If you're unsure which season is right for your trip, we're happy to help you choose based on what you'd like to experience.
What Should You Pack for Iceland?
Whatever time of year you visit, layers are your best friend.
We recommend bringing:
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Warm layers
Comfortable, waterproof shoes or hiking boots
Hat and gloves
Small backpack
Reusable water bottle
Swimwear
Camera or phone
Portable power bank
And don't forget: Icelandic weather doesn't always follow the calendar.
Even in summer, you should be prepared for wind, rain and chilly temperatures.
Should You Rent a Car or Take a Tour?
This depends on your travel style.
Renting a car gives you freedom, but driving in Iceland requires careful planning—particularly in winter or when travelling into remote areas.
A private tour gives you the freedom to enjoy the scenery without worrying about navigation, road conditions or finding the right places to stop.
At Skall Ventures, we specialise in private Iceland experiences for couples, families and small groups. You travel with your own local guide, rather than being part of a large coach tour.
Our comfortable minivan is ideal for Iceland's famous sights, while our 4x4 Super Jeep allows us to reach more remote and rugged areas of the Icelandic Highlands.
Want to See Iceland Beyond the Tourist Trail?
Some of Iceland's most memorable experiences aren't necessarily the ones you'll find at the top of every tourist list.
That's why we love creating personalised adventures around what you actually want to see.
