Master the Weather: What to Wear in Iceland in Every Season 🌧️☀️❄️
There’s an old saying here in Iceland: "If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes."
While our dramatic landscapes are straight out of a dream, our weather can throw four seasons at you before lunch! Whether you're chasing the Northern Lights, trekking across glaciers, or hunting for hidden waterfalls, packing the right gear is the secret to staying comfy.
🧅 The Golden Rule: Layer Like an Onion
Regardless of when you visit, your wardrobe should rely on three essential layers:
Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking): Merino wool or synthetic thermal tops and bottoms. Avoid cotton—it holds moisture and keeps you cold!
Mid Layer (Insulating): A fleece jacket, lightweight down sweater, or traditional Icelandic lopapeysa (wool sweater).
Outer Layer (Weatherproof Shell): A 100% waterproof and windproof jacket and pants. (Leave the umbrella at home—our wind will destroy it!)
🎒 Seasonal Breakdown: What to Pack
☀️ Summer (June – August)
The Vibe: Long daylight hours (Midnight Sun!) and milder temps (8°C to 15°C / 46°F to 59°F).
Must-Haves:
Sleep Mask: Essential for sleeping when the sun barely sets.
Sunglasses & Sunscreen: The sun reflection off glaciers and water is no joke.
Light Activewear: Breathable hiking pants and long-sleeve tops.
🍂 Autumn & 🌸 Spring (Sept–Oct & April–May)
The Vibe: Unpredictable transition months—expect crisp air, sudden rain, and shifting skies.
Must-Haves:
Thermal Base Layers: You'll start needing these daily.
Sturdy Waterproof Hiking Boots: Perfect for muddy trails as seasonal snow melts or rain picks up.
Warm Accessories: Beanie, windproof gloves, and a cozy neck gaiter/buff.
❄️ Winter (November – March)
The Vibe: Snow-capped peaks, magical ice caves, and Northern Lights—along with freezing winds.
Must-Haves:
Heavy Parka: Windproof, waterproof, and insulated.
Microspikes/Ice Cleats: Easily attachable to your boots for icy paths.
Hand/Foot Warmers: Life-savers while waiting outside for the Aurora Borealis!
👙 The All-Season Essential: Swimwear!
No matter what time of year you travel, always pack a swimsuit and a quick-dry towel. Soaking in our natural geothermal hot springs and local heated pools is a year-round Icelandic tradition you won't want to miss.
Pro Tip: Pack waterproof, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support year-round. You’ll be walking on uneven lava rocks, slippery waterfall paths, and wet moss!
